Buck Hill Weekend

Team Afton Families,

Hello, race fans.  Welcome back to another exciting weekend of USSA racing!  This weekend’s Region 1 races will be held at Buck Hill.  The condensed schedules for scored and non-scored races are attached in our Kikzumbut.

My apologies for not getting a reminder out about the race registration deadline – technical difficulties with gmail.  Judging from the number of athletes we have signed up already, it appears that most of you have gotten the hang of this routine.  However, if you still need to register for the races this weekend, please contact Caryn Jones at cussa_region1@yahoo.com.

For our non-scored athletes (U14 and younger), this weekend’s races will be the last races in the Planet Cup series.  The Planet Cup is a season-long series recognizing excellence in U14 and under racers in our region.  Standings are kept for Slalom (SL), Giant Slalom (GS) and overall by place points.

Planet Cup awards will commence following the races on Sunday.  Trophies will be awarded for the top three racers for the season in slalom, GS and overall. Medals will be awarded for places 4-10 in each of these categories. NEW this year, EVERY Region One U14 and under racer will be recognized individually and will receive an award!

Good luck to all our racers, both here and in Colorado!

STATE CHAMP

Team Afton Shines at State Meet

Congratulations to Kate Hanson on being crowned Minnesota State High School Champion!!!

Kate dominated the field to win by over 1.5 seconds at Giant’s Ridge on Wednesday.  This is quite an accomplishment and one that is well deserved.

Also on the podium was Peter Baker, who finished 3rd on the boy’s side.  Peter put together two very strong runs and missed winning by less than a second.  Wow!!!  It was almost a Team Afton sweep!!!

In addition to Kate and Peter, there were a few other Team Afton athletes who finished in the top 15.  Juliana Damberg missed the podium by less than a half second, finishing 4th for the girls.  Also on the girl’s side, Ingrid Foslien finished 8th and Berit Thorson wound up in 14th.  Way to go, ladies!

With her win, Kate is now the 8th Team Afton athlete since the year 2000 to win a state title.
